A new AI-powered app is creating a different way for El Pasoans to connect with city government – delivering real-time local news, government updates and access to services.

The app’s developers, based in Austin, have entered into a partnership with the city of El Paso, which is the first city to be part of the SuperCity app.

Miguel Gamiño Jr., the El Paso-born co-founder and CEO of SuperCity LLC, said the app was created to provide users a more intuitive and consistent way to find and access city services.

“It’s affectionately been described as a ChatGPT-type of experience, but localized,” Gamiño said. “You can ask questions about the city of El Paso. You can ask the chat about City Council meetings, events in the community or garbage schedules.”

Gamiño has worked in city government and with tech companies for three decades. In 2011, he was the chief information and innovation officer at the city of El Paso.

The app launched in March and is available for free in both the Apple and Google app stores. It has thousands of downloads, Gamiño said.

“We want to reach as many users as possible. Ideally, we’d reach every El Pasoan who has a mobile device,” he said. “We’re having conversations with the biggest and smallest municipalities – from California to New York and a bunch in between.”

Laura Cruz-Acosta, the city of El Paso’s strategic communications director, said the city signed a letter of intent with SuperCity, which allows the app to pull information from the city’s social media accounts and website.

The city of El Paso is not paying SuperCity, and the app only uses information that is already public, she said.

“This makes it easier for residents to find city events and updates in one place,” Cruz-Acosta said. “The city agreed because the app could provide another resource to keep the community informed about city news and updates and gives residents an additional way to access information and report issues through 311.”

SuperCity, founded in 2024 with a team of 15 people, has been testing the AI software for the past year before launching.

When users open the app, they see upcoming community events and can select options to chat with the city or report issues. In the future, a pay-bill option will allow users to pay for things like parking tickets or utility bills.

While the app is free, there will be a service fee for paying your bills through the platform.

The startup has not disclosed how much capital it has raised, but Gamiño said it is supported by multiple investors in El Paso, as well as others in the U.S. and globally.

With artificial intelligence seeping into everyday life, SuperCity is creating partnerships with other organizations in El Paso and hopes to partner with cities across the U.S.

It is also collecting input from users to improve the app.

“We listen to all feedback and adapt that into our product roadmap,” Gamiño said. “I get copied on every message that we receive from the feedback link at the top of the app. We take it seriously. Every El Pasoan has the opportunity to help shape the product and develop it further.”
