The developers of SuperCity AI have partnered with Workforce Solutions Borderplex to create an apprenticeship program, offering El Pasoans paid training in artificial intelligence to prepare them for a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Miguel Gamiño Jr., co-founder and CEO of SuperCity AI – a government services app, said AI is transforming the workplace.
“If you want to be prepared with skills for the jobs of the future, now is the time because that change is happening incredibly fast,” Gamiño said. “It’s not just El Paso that needs this, but it’s El Paso’s opportunity to get in front of it.”
SuperCity is launching the program, called SuperForce, in El Paso, but hopes to expand it to other cities.
Leila Melendez, CEO of Workforce Solutions Borderplex, said the program is aligned with their mission to not only develop local talent but help workers find jobs that utilize those new skills.
“What’s important is knowing what tools are out there,” she said. “It’s very early, but it’s coming very fast.”
The program’s website launched Oct. 12, opening applications for a cohort of about 10 apprentices to participate in the 14 to 16-week program.
Participants will work with at least four experts who have AI-related job experience in corporations, including Coca-Cola and Nike. They will train with industry-standard AI models, including those created by OpenAI and Anthropic, and AI development tools like Replit.
Salaries will range from $18 to $22 per hour based on the experience and responsibilities of the apprentices during the course.
Funding for the program will come from Workforce Solutions through federally authorized dollars, and total between $65,000 and $140,000 for the first cohort, depending on how many participants there are.
Workforce Solutions will help participants find permanent positions after they complete the program.
“They can either get hired directly by SuperCity, a client of SuperCity or any other organization because of that work experience on their resume,” Melendez said. “We are like a chaperone, facilitating between the apprentice and their work site.”
Gamiño, former executive vice president of global cities at Mastercard and former director of IT services at the city of El Paso, said they will help participants get hired, market their skills or create their own businesses.
“If you’re understanding not just where (artificial intelligence) is but where it’s going, then you have the ability to adapt continuously,” Gamiño said. “The participants are going to be paired up with AI experts who do this for a living around the world.”
The program is also supported by business incubator Pioneers21.
“This initiative aligns with our mission to cultivate inclusive innovation and equip El Paso’s talent for the demands of a rapidly evolving economy,” said Laura Butler, executive director of Pioneers21. “By integrating hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools, SuperForce is positioning our region as a national leader in future-ready workforce strategies.”
